Part 1: What does this diagram indicate about the indexes of refraction of the three mediums? **image attached inside!** A. The index for Medium 2 is larger than the index for Medium 1. B. The index for Medium 2 is equal to the index for Medium 3. C. The index for Medium 2 is equal to the index for Medium 1. D. The index for Medium 3 is larger than the index for Medium 2. Part 2: *same diagram!* What does this diagram indicate about the speed of light in the three media? A. Light travels faster in Medium 3 than in Medium 2. B. Light has the same speed in Medium 3 and Medium 2. C. Light travels faster in Medium 2 than in Medium 1. D. Light has the same speed in Medium 2 and Medium 1.

OpenStudy (yadu123):

no not sure of this

OpenStudy (yadu123):

actually i dont take physics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay, thank you though!

OpenStudy (yadu123):

im taking ap chem next year

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooh okie!

OpenStudy (perl):

With greater refraction the light will have to travel farther and will take more time to reach a given destination. The higher the refractive index, the lower the speed at which light travels.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so for part 1, is choice D the accurate answer? or would it be choice A? :/ they wouldn't be equal right? I am between those two choice (A and D) now :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@perl? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and i have no idea for part 2 :(

OpenStudy (perl):

i think thats right, just making sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okie yay! what about the second part? :/ confused :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so for part 1 it should be choice D? :)

OpenStudy (perl):

when light moves from a material in which its speed is higher to a material in which its speed is lower, the ray is bent toward the normal

OpenStudy (perl):

so from medium n1 to n2, the ray is bending away from the normal, therefore the speed of light is faster in n2 than in n1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay! so for part 1, it is D ? and for part 2, it would be choice C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

88? :/

OpenStudy (perl):

yes i agree with your answers 1. D , 3. C

OpenStudy (perl):

since it is moving away from the normal in medium 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay! thank you very much @perl :)

OpenStudy (perl):

So to summarize. When light moves from a material in which its speed is higher to a material in which its speed is lower, the ray is bent toward the normal When light moves from a material in which its speed is lower to a material in which its speed is higher, the ray is bent away from the normal The slower the light moves through a medium, the higher the index of refraction. glass has n = 1.66 diamond has 2.419

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes:) *sorry, got booted off haha :P
