that is my best guess because all the other answer choices dont make sense and the words "at first" were the only ones that talk about the time of the story kind of like a counter argument , just not an argument so id say at first ___ at last ___. flicking its tongue is just whats happend, seemed like is just what the narrator thought at first , to remain just describes what the snake would do
