Come on, Derek,” Matt taunted. “You don’t have to jump the ramp if you’re scared. We understand.” Matt's friends laughed at his words. Derek swallowed hard and looked at the steep bike ramp.
     “Big D, what are you doing?” asked Jorge, Derek’s best friend. “You don’t have to listen to this guy. Everyone knows he’s all talk. Remember last year when he tricked Paul into climbing on the roof of the school? Paul broke his leg and had to be in a cast all summer.”
     “I know, Little J, but I'm good at stunts like this,” Derek replied. “My brother rides in BMX competitions, and he taught me all kinds of bicycle stunts. I know how to stay safe."
      “Well, your brother’s serving our country in the Marine Corps, dude,” Jorge reminded his friend. “If he were here, he would tell you to be the bigger man and walk away.”
     "I know," admitted Derek. "But I just can't back down now." Before Jorge could say another word, Derek pulled on his helmet and safety pads and jumped on his bike.
      "I can't believe he's actually doing it!" laughed Matt.
      "Whoa, look at that," said one of Matt's friends as Derek raced down the ramp at top speed and flipped his bike.
     "He actually did a backflip on his bike!" said Matt in amazement.
      "You rock, Derek!" Jorge cheered, and the boys who had made fun of Derek gathered around to congratulate him.
      "What's wrong, Matt?" Derek asked. "Nothing to say?"
      "I guess not," Matt muttered as he walked away.
