Your first course will be the most challenging.  It's just a fact of life that you'll be learning programming, a programming language and programmer's tools all at the same time.  It will settle down after a couple of weeks.

People have said nice things about Harvard's CS50 course.  I thought that Stanford's CS 106A, Programming Methodologies was a good course.
