What is the best way to catch a particular sporting moment?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

What do you know about depth of field, shutter speed, ISO, and volume of light into a lense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The action happens fast. You need to anticipate where and when the peak action will occur. Using a fast shutter speed to stop the motion helps, as does a longer focal length lens when you can not stand very close to where the action is taking place.

Also, most sporting photographers use large lenses. The diameter of the lense determines how much light gets in. The more light, the easier it is to maintain a fast shutter speed and a wide depth of field that will let you capture all the people involved in the action.
