to play a minor scale you must

1- Find the 7th and 8th notes.
2- Raise them a half step.
3- Attempt to play it 1st on B flat
4- Repeat step 3 but on all 12 major scales.
5- Celebrate.

So for a c major scale, by your logic would change the root (1st and 8th) to B and the 7th, A to A#.
When the scale is actually C D D# F G G# B

you raise them a half step. every other note is played normal but the 7th and 8th is raised a half step
