A topic sentence is like the sentence that is explaining the whole thing. lets say the topic of your essay is "Exercise is important"  the topic sentence is stating that is what your going to be talking about. example topic sentence could be " People today need to know the importance on exercise" or something like that. so basically, the topic sentence is telling the readers what the essay is about.

The topic sentence is a prescriptive grammatical term to describe the sentence in an expository paragraph which summarizes the main idea of that paragraph.
