Suppose two stars are located in region A of the H-R diagram shown in the figure below. Star X appears much dimmer than Star Y as seen from Earth. Which star can be inferred to be nearer to Earth, and how do you know?

The closer the star is to the earth the bright it should be the further away it will be dimmer. I learned this when I was in the 9th grade as well as the 8th.
