The Great Depression of 1930 through 1940 severely suppressed consumer spending, The need for all available materials to be focused on WWII military production prevented the mass production of most consumer products. Industry also had amassed the results of at least 15 years of research and development advances, most of which was not available and/or affordable to the general public. Economic reforms put into place during the Great Depression provided additional stability for the American economy which in turn allowed the future expansion of consumer borrowing and spending. The massive industrial efforts required to win WWII resulted in factories across the US with high volume & high quality production level machinery, technical knowledge, skilled labor and channels for materials, yet as the war closed, much of this immense capacity was no longer needed to produce military equipment.
