umm no ive tried to read it again and again but it doesn make any sense for which catagory to put them in ;/
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
"A right triangle with one leg of 6 inches and area 24 square inches"
what must the height be?
OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
3 ? because 6 x 3 = 24
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
6 times 3 isn't 24
OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
oh 18 :/ i dont know where my brain is today

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
i meant 6 x 4
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
6 times 4 = 24 works if you have a rectangle that is 6 by 4
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
but with triangles, you cut that in half to get the area
area of triangle = (base*height)/2
OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
so 6 x 4 = 24 / 2? = 12
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
but we want the area to be 24, not 12

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
how can we fix it? what must 4 be changed into?
OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
2?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
hmm seems like the area got smaller when we wanted it to get bigger
OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
so 6 x 6
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
6 times 6 = 36
cut that in half: 36/2 = 18
remember we want an area of 24
OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
but i dont know how to get there
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
solve for h
(6*h)/2 = 24

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
whats the hieght
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
(6*h)/2 = 24
6*h = 24*2
6*h = 48
h = ???
OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
um so 6 x4=24
6x 8 - 48
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yeah the height must be 8
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
it cannot be anything else, which means only 1 triangle is possible

ok let's go over the other boxes

no angles
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you sure? no triangles possible?
OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):
ya cuz scalene is no sides 0
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
scalene just means all 3 sides are different
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
what 3 whole numbers add up to 6?

yes
