Identify items in your life that are made of each type of element: metal, nonmetal, and metalloid. For each item, explain why the properties of that type of element are necessary for the function of that item. I'm having some trouble coming up with examples. I'll fan anybody if they can help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What things contain metals?

OpenStudy (insert_username):

I was thinking of guitar strings or maybe aluminum foil

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay lets take aluminium foil. Think about its properties. What makes it so good to use as foil?

OpenStudy (insert_username):

It conducts heat so it cools off fast

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes it conducts heat, but there's something else. Think about is physical properties.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What can you do with it?

OpenStudy (insert_username):

You can shape it because it bends easily

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It it flexible and ductile, a property of metals.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And what would happen if aluminum foil didn't have these characteristics?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or why should it have these characteristics?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Through aluminum metal.

OpenStudy (insert_username):

It wouldn't be useful because it would just be a thick sheet or block of metal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep. It can't be used for cooking.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So from this do you have some idea to approach the rest?

OpenStudy (insert_username):

Yeah I understand it a lot more now. Thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem. Happy to help.
