They want you to solve for the variable and then plug the solution back in to see if equals the right side so left side = right side, if they equal it will be the right solution, so $$5(x-3)=45 \implies 5x-15=45$$ I distributed the 5 over everything in brackets now collect like terms and solve for x :)
