if the new balance is $275 and he added $25.5, then you can easily write down that to find the old balance (n) all you need is to subtract 25.5 from 275. so that is: 275 - 25.5 = n if you manipulate the equation (add 25.5 on both sides), you can see that 25.5 + n = 275
