inside!:) thanks!!

Referring to this paragraph: Lough Ness is about twenty-four miles long, and from one mile to two miles broad. It is remarkable that Boethius, in his description of Scotland, gives it twelve miles of breadth. When historians or geographers exhibit false accounts of places far distant, they may be forgiven, because they can tell but what they are told; and that their accounts exceed the truth may be justly supposed, because most men exaggerate to others, if not to themselves: but Boethius lived at no great distance; if he never saw the lake, he must have been very incurious, and if he had seen it, his veracity yielded to very slight temptations.

@Whitemonsterbunny17 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

#1: The reference to Boethius in this paragraph suggests that: A. Boethius described the size of Lough Ness accurately, though he may never have seen it. B. Boethius described the size of Lough Ness inaccurately because he probably never saw it. C. Lough Ness must have changed significantly since Boethius' time. D. Boethius described the size Lough Ness accurately, unlike others who described it inaccurately because they had never seen it. E. Boethius described the size of Lough Ness inaccurately either because he never took the trouble to go see it or because he was deliberately stretching the truth.

#2: The author's tone with regard to Boethius in this paragraph is best described as: A. condemning. B. satirical. C. competitive. D. admiring. E. hostile. I feel like it's not admiring or competitive, but would it be condemning? I'm really not quite sure :/

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

For the first one, the hint is in the last sentence.

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Have any guesses?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh ermm would that mean choice A? because i am not sure if i am understanding it correctly, but they say he may not have been curious about it, yet (this part i'm not 100% sure if i understood correctly!) what he says is very close to being completely accurate?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Lemme try to convert it into better wording: but Boethius lived not too far from the lake; if he never saw the lake, he must not have been very curious, and if he had seen it, his accuracy showed only slight desires (meaning he wasn't very accurate).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay! so it should be choice B? :O

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Well, let's look at the second sentence as well. That has some more needed information.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay! oops!! so choice E? since it could be because it was not seen or because of exaggeration?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Yes, I believe that's correct. ^.^

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

So now, for question #2... What's your guess there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay! and for two, i think condemning? is that right?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Yes, I believe you're correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

awesome, thanks so much!! :D
