Why was Mahatma Gandhi significant? He prevented bloody revolution in India as a result of his political and spiritual guidance. He worked as a political leader and lawyer to press the British government for greater reform. He conducted a movement calling for the creation of a separate Muslim state named Pakistan. He initiated the policy of nonalignment to prevent India from becoming a client state to world powers.
