Why did the Confederates take the offensive so soon after they saved Richmond? It was more suited to Lee's personality. They had a numerical advantage and wanted to take advantage of it. It was best to follow up on the successful campaign while enemy morale was shaky. They wanted to hurry and invade Washington before reinforcements could get there.
