A population of chimpanzees was separated when the forest that they lived in had a section cut down and a town was built. After a long period of time, the chimpanzees came back into contact but were incapable of breeding. Which of the following best describes the process that occurred? A. adaptation B. speciation C. convergent selection D. stabilizing selection

Hai @mirgir12 Can you please say how you would have sort it out ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say that its A? @JoshKoikkara

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wonders how ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say it's B, Can you say how it shows speciation ? @mirgir12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hint: Speciation can be defined as: 1: the formation of new species; 2: the splitting of a phylogenetic lineage; 3: acquistion of reproductive isolating mechanisms producting discontinuities between populations; 4: process by which a species splits into 2 or more species.

OpenStudy (twheenan):

Whether two groups can interbreed or not is one way to determine whether they are separate species. Adaptation to different circumstances may have occurred, but the inability of the two groups to breed would suggest that speciation (allopatric speciation in fact!) is the focus of this question. Hope that helps.
