When a muscle contracts, what happens? Calcium combines with ATP to produce sarcomeres. Actin produces myosin and ATP. Myosin heads attach to and pull on a series of actin-binding sites. Calcium produces contractions.

When muscle contracts, it generates a force at the origin and insertion, causing the muscle to shorten and changing the angle of the joint.
