The picture above is of a statue created by the Olmec civilization, an ancient civilization that was found in Central America. The head is thought to represent a god or ruler and is about nine feet tall. After finding sculptures like this one, what assumption did archaeologists first make about the Olmec?

The Olmec were the first 'major' civilization in Mexico following a progressive development in Soconusco.[1] They lived in the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico, in the present-day states of Veracruz and Tabasco. It has been speculated that Olmec derive in part from neighboring Mokaya and/or Mixe–Zoque.
