Which was an underlying cause for the partition of India by Great Britain in 1947? Half of India was mountainous, and the other half was coastal plains. Great Britain wanted to retain political power in parts of India. Nehru refused to cooperate with Muslim leaders. India's Hindus and Muslims had a history of conflict.
