I can only say that they at an angle 90 degrees to each other and the multiplication of the gradients is equal to -1. Not good at explaining. :(

Simply put, the relationship between the equations of perpendicular lines is that of a negative inverse relation. The inverse of \[\large y=5x\] will be \[\large y= -\frac{1}{5}x\]
