OpenStudy (hayleymeyer):

Hot coffee in a mug cools over time and the mug warms up. Which describes the energy in this system? The average kinetic energy of the particles in the mug decreases. The average kinetic energy of the particles in the coffee increases. Thermal energy from the mug is transferred to the coffee. Thermal energy from the coffee is transferred to the mug.

OpenStudy (hayleymeyer):

please help <3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well if the energy from the heat of the coffee, is making the mug cooler then..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which would your answer be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry I meant making the mug warmer

OpenStudy (hayleymeyer):

A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The higher the energy of the particles, the hotter something will be. So if the coffee's energy is high, it means the coffee is hot. Over time, the energy decreases allowing the coffee to cool. But now the mug is warm, so which one do you think describes how the mug warmed up?

OpenStudy (hayleymeyer):

ohh ok, I think it's C.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well heat is the transfer of energy from a hot object, to a cold object. So which is the hot object?

OpenStudy (hayleymeyer):

wouldn't it be the mug? because the heat around it will make the coffee warm up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well the mug isn't originally hot. But the coffee is. So when you pour the hot coffee into the mug, the mug will most likely warm up right?

OpenStudy (hayleymeyer):

yess :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So my best guess, would be that the thermal energy from the coffee is going to the mug :)

OpenStudy (hayleymeyer):

alrighty, thank you for your help and patience!
