WHOA! Now we really need PEMDAS Parenthesis , Exponents , Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction ... brackets are also considered part of the parenthesis option which is to do that section first. Let's start at the denominator since that's easier

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

so we have our P which is () we need to do that first . what is 8-2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

yes... so now our denominator has 7(6)+4

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

E isn't showing up so we move on... we do have M.. what is 7 x 6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

17

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

ummm we are multiplying... 7 x 6 = 42

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

so now our denominator is 42+ 4 there is no D, so we move to A which is addition... what is 42+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

46

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

yes! so our denominator is 46... now let's work on the numerator .. if I remembered correctly whenever there is a bracket and parenthesis at the same time.. the bracket portion is done first

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

\[6[5(3-9)-1]+2\]

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

I see brackets so we need to tackle that first . what is 3-9?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

close.. but we have a positive number 3 and a negative number 9 our positive number is too small, so we end up with a negative number 6 It's like you ordered $9 food, but you only have $3, you owe $6 dollars -6

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

\[6[5(-6)-1]+2\] so we have no exponents.. we move on to multiplication what is 5 x (-6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-30

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

hi.,,, and yes that's correct

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

\[6[(-30)-1]+2\] we don't have addition so we move on to subtraction . what is -30-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-31

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

yes. \[6[-31]+2 \] so now we have multiplication which is -31 x 6

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

-31 x 6 is -186 so -186 +2 which is the only thing to solve and uses addition -186+2 = -184 and our denominator is 46 . We can reduce this \[\frac{-184}{46}\]

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

wow this works actually nicely... apparently since the greatest common factor is 46 we have -4 -184/ 46 = -4 and 46/46 = 1 so -4/1 = -4
