Evaluate the following expression using the values given:
Find 5x − 3y − z if x = −2, y = 2, and z = −3
−19
19
13
−13
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I know that first, I would fill in the blanks.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
5x-2-3x2- (-3)
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Do you need me to explain it, or to just give you an answer?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I do not want an answer, I just want someone to kind-of watch my work, so that I know I am solving it the right way. Asking for the answer would be against openstudy policies...

Like integer rules?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
first, I would solve the multiplication, so 5x-2=-10, and 3x2=6, so
-10-6-(-3), right?
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Yes that's correct!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
okay.. next, it would become -16- (-3), right, since we subtract 6 from -10?
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Yep :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):
then it would become -19??
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@MichaelAlex292
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Not quite... use your integer rules
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-13?
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Yes, now do you why?

not really, both are negative, and we are not multiplying?
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Take this as an example:
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
6 - (-3)
When there are 2 minus signs, you add
6 + 3
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Now look at the one we were working on above
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
-16 - (-3) = -16 + 3 = -13

oh they cancel eachother out?
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
See it now?
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Yea, the 2 minus signs form a plus
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Great!

can u help with one more? Again, I dont want an answer, I want help
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Ok
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Evaluate the following: −3 − (−2).
−5
−1<< I followed same rule as last time...
1
−6
OpenStudy (michaelalex292):
Wow, great job:\[-3 - (-2) = -3 + 2 = -1\]
You are correct!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok, thanks!
