Traveling at 65 miles per hour, how many minutes, rounded to the nearest whole number, does it take to drive 125 miles from San Diego to Malibu? 2 60 115 130

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm @ganeshie8 @Thesn1 @UsukiDoll

This one actually stumped me pretty hard. I feel like I could just multiply the minutes to the hours.. but Idk, I'm really bad at math, I'm 18 doing freshman math because I couldnt ever bother to come to school, but I'm trying now so I'm ready to learn it, any help would be appreciated really. :)

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

these problems don't appear at all at higher level math courses, so I forgot how to do them

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

65 miles each hour how many hours it takes to travel 125 miles ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well if I do 65+65 I get 130 miles.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Yes, in 2 hours you travel 130 miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is 115, this was a trick question

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

never said 130 is the answer

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

One dumb way to work this problem is like this : Time = \(\dfrac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Speed}}\) = \(\dfrac{\text{125 miles}}{\text{65 miles/hour}}\) = \(\text{1.92 hours}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

multiply that by 60 to get the time in minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's exactly what I did, and got 115.2

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

You got it right!

Always eager to learn B) Doing whatever it takes!

I think inquisitiveness is the foremost of all the virtues for a student to have, keep it up! :)

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

omg I had that answer earlier... I was doing 125/65 and got 1.92 too :(

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

and the miles label gets canceled out leaving with hours. so 1.92 hours -> approx. 2 hours.
