PLEASE EXPLAIN Which of the following polynomials has x+2 as a factor? A) x^2 +4 B) x^2 -2x +1 C) 2x^2 -2x +1 D)x^3-6x^2+11x-6 E) 2x^2 + 10x^2 +10x -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this a flvs Q?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a what Q???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry Q=question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know but fivs Q?? what you mean by that???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Florida virtual school = flvs is this a question off of their site if so can you tell me what number lesson

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it isnt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay 1 sec

@Romwil this one is kinda giving me problems so I called in some help

OpenStudy (freckles):

if x+2 is a factor then x=-2 is a zero see for which polynomial when you plug in -2, gives you a result of 0

OpenStudy (freckles):

I bet one of your choices is a tyoe-o and I think I know which one :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which one?

OpenStudy (freckles):

Look at your choices and you tell me which one looks like you have like terms.

OpenStudy (freckles):

A) x^2 +4 B) x^2 -2x +1 C) 2x^2 -2x +1 D)x^3-6x^2+11x-6 E) 2x^2 + 10x^2 +10x -4 These are the choices you posted... Do you see a type-o? Look at the choice that has like terms.

OpenStudy (freckles):

Is the last choice really suppose to have so many x^2 's?

OpenStudy (freckles):

anyways I think it should be: A) x^2 +4 B) x^2 -2x +1 C) 2x^2 -2x +1 D)x^3-6x^2+11x-6 E) 2x^3 + 10x^2 +10x -4 now just evaluate each of those at x=-2 and see which outputs 0 and that will be your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

None of the polynomials have x+2 as a factor. Refer to the attached result from the Mathematica 9 program.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what the heck are you talking about

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@freckles you're right

OpenStudy (freckles):

this is why one of the choices is a type-o I think the type-o is in E because when you replace the x's with -2's in 2x^3+10x^2+10x-4 you get???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I plugged -2 in all of them and E was the answer, and that's the correct answer there's no tyop

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get 0

OpenStudy (freckles):

right but there was a type-o @Romwil in the original question

OpenStudy (freckles):

you have 2x^2+10x^2+10x-4

OpenStudy (freckles):

as choice E

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but either or that's how you solve it right?

OpenStudy (freckles):

yep you just look for which outputs 0 for x=-2 that is how you solve it (or I believe is the quickest way anyways)

OpenStudy (freckles):

it isn't the only way just the quickest in my opinion
