The mean of eight numbers is 41 The mean of two of the numbers is 29 What is the mean of the other six numbers?

OpenStudy (butterflydreamer):

"mean" basically meant the average.. So if the average of 8 numbers is 41 What would the TOTAL of these 8 numbers be? (to do this, multiply 8 by 41) Secondly, follow the same method and find out the total of the two numbers which have an average of 29 (so, multiply 2 by 29).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so 8 x 41 = 328 and 2 x 29 = 58...

OpenStudy (butterflydreamer):

Excellent :)! So now we know that ALL 8 numbers must add up to 328 right? We also know that TWO of the 8 numbers have a total of 58.. So now we need to find the sum of the other 6 numbers... 328 - 58 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

270

OpenStudy (butterflydreamer):

yes :) The sum of the other 6 numbers = 270 The question asks you to find the "mean" /average of these 6 numbers. We know the total = 270 so divide it by 6 and you'll get your mean :)!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

45 :D So the final answer = 45?

OpenStudy (butterflydreamer):

correct! :D!! YAY

Thanks butterflydreamer :DDDD
