A farmer wants to fence in a rectangular area that is mile wide by mile long, as shown in the picture. ?/What proportion can the farmer use to calculate how many feet of fencing he will need?

OpenStudy (phi):

If the width is 1 mile and length 1 mile, the perimeter is 1+1+1+1= 4 miles and probably they are thinking: \[ \frac{ 5280 \ ft}{1 \ mile} = \frac{ x }{4 \ miles} \]
