How do you chat with someone if you have their username?

Hello! Welcome to OpenStudy!

You can send users private messages by clicking on their username, then clicking  the "Send Message" button, typing your desired message in the text box, then clicking "Send". 

You can also join any of the chats (which are at the bottom of the screen) and meet new people there!

So there is no way of messaging someone only if I have their username?

There is.

If you click on the message icon at the top of your screen, then click on the "+ Write a New Message" button, it should give you a blank message, where you can type in a username to send the message to, then a text box for the desired message.
