People from many diverse backgrounds, including free African Americans, Spanish, Seminoles, and Europeans, lived and traded in St. Augustine. Roman Catholics and Cubans came to the St. Augustine area and developed their culture in many ways including the creation of the first Spanish-language newspaper.<<my answer Steamboats on the river helped transport cargo and people between Florida and the Caribbean, allowing many ethnicities to move to St. Augustine. As available land increased, many Southern slave owners moved to Florida and settled in St. Augustine which allowed African Americans to introduce their culture into the area.
