What is this math symbol and what is it asking me to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (misty1212):

HI!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

HI :)

OpenStudy (misty1212):

that symbol \(\cup\) means "union"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks! Now how do I solve this problem? I don't exactly know what it is asking.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

U means union - that is the union of the 2 sets A and B which are illustrated by the circles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it wants me to find what A + B is minus the center?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

A has \(.3\) and B has \(.35\) and they have \(.10\) in common that means \[A\cup B=0.30+0.35-0.10\]

OpenStudy (misty1212):

yeah exactly A + B minus the center

OpenStudy (misty1212):

the center is called \(A\cap B\) reads "A intersect B"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.55 is the answer then, I believe. Thanks a bunch :)

OpenStudy (misty1212):

yes it is \(0.55\) \[\huge\color\magenta\heartsuit\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you :)
