The regular price of a sweater was $21.50. The sweater was on sale for 18% off. How much was the discount?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no answers but I was thinking 17.63 cause I did 21.50 -18% and got 17.63 am I right? @ganeshie8

@Vocaloid if u mind helping

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

hmm, not quite, you can't subtract 21.50 and 18 because 21.50 is in dollars and 18 is a percent 18 percent is the same as 18/100 discount = (18/100)*(21.50)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I got 3.87 would 3.87 be the price or what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the price of the item is 17.63

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

the question asks "how much is the discount", not "how much does the item cost"...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the discount was 3.87

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

^ correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah so I was right ok thx
