We have two variables, independent and dependent. An independent variable is the variable you have control over, what you can choose and manipulate. While the dependent variable is the one which you measure. For example, in a study looking at how tutoring impacts test scores, the dependent variable would be the participants' test scores. While the independent variable would be tutoring.
