Angelica's service club is selling flowers for a fundraiser. Each flower costs them $0.50 to purchase. They set the sale price of each flower at the purchase price plus 40%. Write and solve an equation to determine how many flowers they will need to sell to make a profit of $500. Use complete sentences to explain what each number and variable in your equation represents. Write your solution in the context of the original problem.

I need help understanding the question and to figure out how to solve it my brain just cant get the hang of math today.

OpenStudy (hlambach):

First, find out the price they will be selling the flowers at.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be.70?

OpenStudy (hlambach):

Yes! :) Now, the whole equation needs to equal 500. So, Profit - cost of roses = 500

OpenStudy (hlambach):

What would x represent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would the number of flowers they need to sell be 2500?

OpenStudy (hlambach):

I'm not even sure of that myself yet, since I haven't solved the formula. But the question asks you to find the formula, so lets focus on that first. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o ok

OpenStudy (hlambach):

So qhat woud the x in the formula represent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

profit

OpenStudy (hlambach):

Sorry, my earlier formula was wrong: Money received - cost of buying = profit

OpenStudy (hlambach):

You already have the profit given, which is 500

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so money received would be x

OpenStudy (hlambach):

Well, x which actually be the amount of flowers, since that's the only variable you don't know.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o

OpenStudy (hlambach):

Money received would be 70c per flower, right? and cost would be 50c per flower.

OpenStudy (hlambach):

All of that needs to equal $500. So how would you make that into a formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you would get a profit of .20c per flower and if you dived that into 500 you get 2500 right

OpenStudy (hlambach):

Yep!

OpenStudy (hlambach):

So .2x = 500. There's your formula!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much

OpenStudy (hlambach):

Yep! No problem! If I helped, please consider giving me a medal. :)

OpenStudy (hlambach):

Oh, thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

xD np
