diversity
"Species diversity is a measure of the diversity within an ecological community that incorporates both species richness (the number of species in a community) and the evenness of species' abundances."
It is a population
A population refers to the number of organisms in an area that belong to the same species, not the number of different organisms in an area. For example: If I say that a zoo has a 4 monkeys, 2 zebras, 3 wild hogs, and 8 lions, then I have just given you the diversity of that environment. If I only told you that the zoo has 8 lions, then I would have given you the lion population at that zoo, but not the "total number of different species living in a given area".
