solve the quadratic, with a's (or any other variable you choose for substitution).... and sub the cos(x) for the variable back to solve for x.

\(\large\color{black}{ \displaystyle 4\cos^2x-4\cos x =2 }\) substitution w=cos(x), \(\large\color{black}{ \displaystyle 4w^2-4w =2 }\)
