synthesis means to produce or make use of 

Many life on earth as we know it, depend on plants (autotrophs).  Even if you do not eat plants, the other animals that you eat, depend on other animals that eat plants. Plants depend on light energy as one of the key ingredients to produce food for itself and eventually those that depended on it.
