According to the concept of “survival of the fittest," if a population of birds eats worms that they find deep under ground by using their beaks, which members of the bird population would be more fit?

According to the concept of "survival of the fittest" the birds with the longer beaks would be able to eat more worms that are deeper in the ground, as opposed to the birds with the shorter, wider, and flatter beaks.
Wouldn't it be the birds that had the longer beaks. If the worms continue to get deeper then the only way the birds can get the worms is if their beaks are longer so therefore the birds with the shorter beaks could eventually starve and die off or they have to find a new food source to survive
