Which of the following is an example of a run-on sentence? A) Swimming is a good sport it helps build muscle. B) He has been a swimmer since he was very young C) Because of this, he has grown up to be quite strong D) He will probably love swimming his entire life

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

A run-on sentence is two sentences not properly mixed as one. You can fix it by using a semi-colon in between independent clauses, but you can't use a comma.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

'.' i think it was b..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

'.' i think it was b..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Comma serves to connect two independent clauses together so that the sentence flows without interrupting the comfort

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Well here's the thing: A run-on sentence has two independent clauses, but sentence B has clauses that can't stand alone.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in B "since" serves to connect the two independent clasues together:)

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Well actually a comma is used to separate thoughts, not independent clauses. That's what semi-colons do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

On the other hand, you may consider A or D since they are without a comma.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are right. Well, you are right, I think, so.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o.0..wat..lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Take a look at A and D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see if one makes sense more than the other.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

So my advice is to read through the sentences. Read them aloud and stop where you think the sentence should end. With what's leftover, decide if THAT part of the sentence can stand alone. If it can, it's a run-on sentence. If it can't, that sentence is just fine.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did ...D: still dont understand..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The swimming is a good sport it helps build muscle. Or He will probably love swimming his entire life. Scrutinize both sentences reading them out loud. See if you can pick out a fragment of the written sentence that can be a whole sentence:)

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

You sure? Well if that doesn't help, allow me to make an example of a run-on sentence. I have a friend named Doodle she likes to hide bodies. You see how it should end at Doodle? But then all the stuff after it can also stand alone as a sentence?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Am I relevant Kyan?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You seem to not understand the difference well because you need training but hey it's going to be okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):
