Can someone please help me understand how to do this? Read the passage from “The Caged Bird.” The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn and he names the sky his own. What are the connotative meanings of sighing, as used in the poem? Check all that apply. A. longing B. sadness C. relaxation D. exhaling E. peacefulness F. breathing

OpenStudy (grimsnightmare):

I would think E just because it's a free bird, and in the last sentence he is naming the sky his. So you know it couldn't be longing or sadness. In my opinion it couldn't be D or F because trees don't actually breath. Hope it helped at least a little.
