What is the solution set of |–x| = –10? {10} {–10} {–10, 10} no solution

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

hello :)

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

Do you know what the absolute value bars represent

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

or what they do to a number

OpenStudy (welshfella):

the vertical lines around the -x mean the absolute value which is always positive so what do you think ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

{-10,10}

OpenStudy (welshfella):

no NOte: the right side of the equation is negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -x would be a negative too since there is a negative? or is there no solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm probably making it harder than it really is. -.-

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

|dw:1435767166480:dw|

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I understand that, but, I'm still confuse on how to get my answer. >.< Sorry I'm really trying

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

np :)

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

now that you get that we can get it

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Absolute value can't be equivalent to a negative.

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

since we know that no matter what we plug in for x since it is in absolute value, it will never equal a negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it's no solution right?

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

yup :)

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

just for future problems

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Absolute value is basically a distance. And distance is always positive. (if you want, I can elaborate)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay... I originally got that but I wasn't sure.

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

if you have -1 times |-x| = -10 you could get a solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And that's fine @SolomonZelman I get it now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks guys!

OpenStudy (jennyrlz):

np :)
