The south was much more relied on farming and agricultural business and didn't have very many factories.
The Southern economy used slaves because labor was cheap. Although slavery was highly profitable it had a negative impact on the economy. An overemphasis on slave-based agriculture led Southerners to neglect industry and transportation improvements.
