How did the fighting in Iwo Jima and Okinawa affect the Allies' Pacific strategy? It was decided that the Soviet Union would begin to send troops to the Pacific. US admirals abandoned the island-hopping strategy for air assaults. Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb on mainland Japan. The Allies and Japan agreed to a status quo stalemate in the Pacific.
