Security will help keep information private, and help keep out hackers. Typically, the more you have to protect, the more security you'll need.

The original network was later nicknamed "Sneaker Net." That was where people would put things on a disk, walk to where it was needed, hand over the disk. This was replaced by connecting the machines to share data more directly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The "internet" was originally set up under DARPA for contingency purposes. i.e. if one part of the network was hit, the rest of the network might still function. The aim of security is always protecting important resources.
