8a: The Cherokees sided with the Confederates because they felt like the Confederacy would give them greater freedom. Additionally, slavery was legal in the Indian lands, so some Native American slave owners wanted to help the Confederacy. - b: The Confederacy was forced to defend with limited resources an enormous land mass, which the Union quickly took over. - c: Gaining control of the Mississippi River was the greatest victory for the Union. It caused great hardship for the South by dividing and weakening the Confederacy
