test of independence, is a chi squared test. if we view this 2x2 as a matrix, then the t.s. can be calculated as the square of the determinant, times n, divided by the product of the totals for each row/col a b | a+b c d | c+d ----------------- a+c b+d | n \[\chi^2=\frac{n|A|^2}{(a+b)(a+c)~(c+d)(b+d)}\]
