Thomas Carlyle, Scottish essayist, wrote in his book Past and Present, “It is not to die, or even to die of hunger, that makes a man wretched . . . But it is to live miserable . . . to work sore and yet gain nothing . . .” Consider the people working in the factories at the beginning of the industrial age and the slaves who have worked in the agricultural industries. If you had to choose a life, which one would you choose? Explain your answer. I'd like to hear peoples ideas!
