The map of a walking trail is drawn on a coordinate grid with three points of interest. The trail starts at R(−1, 4) and goes to S(5, 4) and continues to T(5, −2). The total length of the walking trail is ____ units. (Input whole numbers only.)

OpenStudy (phi):

You could use the distance formula to find the length between R and S , and then between S and T. Or, if you plot the points, you see that from R to S you move only sideways (at the same y), so count how many steps between -1 and 5 to get the distance from R to S and do the same for S to T (except it is straight down)
