How do I do this: 6.2*10^-5 - 8.3*10^-6

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

(6.2 * (10^(-5))) - (8.3 * (10^(-6))) = 5.37 × 10-5

Is there a rule that says that the lowest exponent will be in the result?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

it is easy 8.3 * 10^-6 is also can be written as 0.83 * 10^-5 right ? see if u got that . SO now its is easy ! U take out the 10^-6 then u will have to simplify this (6.2-0.83) 10^-5 . I hope this step onwards u can carry out the calculation

Oh I see! Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (jfraser):

When you add or subtract values in scientific notation, BOTH values must have the same power for the exponent. You can change either one, but you have to change one
