I don't get this: Walter had 3/5 yard of wrapping paper. He used 3/4 of it. How much wrapping paper did he use? I found the common denominator and I get a subtraction problem of 12/20 - 15/20, which is obviously wrong. Help!

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

your math is right (3/5-3/4 = 12/20 - 15/20). the problem is a little weird because Walter uses more wallpaper than he has to begin with (3/4 > 3/5)

The answer is supposedly 9/20; but I don't see how
